Virtual Date Ideas That Feel Like Dates

Updated August 2026 · 8 min read

A video call about logistics is not a date. A date has a start, a small amount of structure, and an end that is not “we fell asleep on the call again.” These ideas are ordinary on purpose. You can repeat them without a production budget.

How to make it feel like a date

Shared meals

Order from the same type of place, or cook the same simple recipe. Eat together on video. Talk about the food and the day, not the relationship’s five-year plan. If time zones kill dinner, share breakfast on one side and dinner on the other — still a meal together.

Parallel walks

Both of you go outside with earbuds. Narrate what you see. Side-by-side walking, even on separate sidewalks, is less interview-like than two faces on a couch. Safety: stay in public, well-lit areas; do not livestream your exact home approach if you would not want that public.

Watch-alongs

Pick a film or a short series neither of you has seen. Use a legal watch party feature where the platform offers one (Netflix has had party-style extensions and official features that change by region; follow the service you pay for). Count down “3-2-1 play.” Comment in a side chat or on the call. Keep it to one movie so it does not become an all-nighter.

Games that do not require a gaming PC

Avoid games that make one of you furious unless you already know you compete well. The date should not end in a sulk.

Make something

A playlist of ten songs with a theme. A shared photo album of “ugly but true” weekday moments. A list of neighborhoods to walk on the next visit. Making a small artifact gives the call a product so it is not only feelings.

Learn something short

A 20-minute language lesson, a beginner dance video you both look ridiculous doing, a museum’s free online tour. Keep it short so it stays playful. You are not earning a certificate.

What to skip

Virtual dates support a relationship that also has visits and a plan. They are not a substitute for deciding whether you will ever live in the same place. For that, read closing the distance and what actually makes LDR work.
